"I Just Work Here" presents: Welcome Aboard

As I drew this, I tried to think of all the warning speeches I got when I arrived, but on reflection they were few and far between. When I was hired, our office was so short-staffed everyone was trying to convince me to stay without sugarcoating the hardships of the job-- not an easy line to walk. It wasn't until I'd been there some time (and was trained along with my fellow newbies) that I began hearing various analogies for life in benefits programs.

Among the analogies I heard were references to Chinese Water Torture, a field of grass during a severe drought, and a meat grinder. Quite frankly, my experience hasn't added up to any of these, so I came up with the carousel idea, which seems both accurate and appropriate. Social work is tough, no matter what field you're in, or if you studied social work in school or not. And the turnover rate is pretty high because of it; comes with the territory, I suppose. I only wish we had an actual carousel in the office...
